The archetypes in the cards are mined for imagery and metaphor, but they are also meant to be reflective of different phases of love. Or when you come across Death, and the game repeatedly tells you it’s the little death, (le petit mort, orgasm), and you pursue and battle a cute, violent blonde with a scythe. It’s not surprising, then, when at one point you come across The Hermit and then fly through an abstract level on your own. This is a game about falling in and out of love, the chase and the hunt of it, the heartbreak and the sweetness of it. Tarot cards feature heavily as a motif and thematically. Sayonara Wild Hearts is a game that I wish was similarly more facilitative than interpretative. It’s more facilitative than interpretative. If the card represents someone else, I ask them to dialogue with the other card as if it’s that person and we see what comes out of the conversation.
I then ask them to pay attention to details in each card, project themselves into the card and speak as various parts of it.
Secondly, a more therapeutic way in which I ask the person to look through the deck and select cards that they are drawn to to represent themselves, other significant people and aspects of their situation. Firstly, the traditional way in which different cards have a fixed meaning and I am interpreting the cards, their position and their relationship with each other in order to give someone a reading. I know how to read Tarot cards in two different ways.
